The Theatre Royal is an important stop for large-scale productions of theatre, dance and opera. In contrast, the Nottingham Playhouse provides an extensive programme of comedy, theatre and dance by smaller regional groups, and is notorious for pushing the boundaries of performing arts.

Castle Museum &Art Gallery is the most high-profile arts venue. Its regular collection of European Renaissance and British art since the 18th century is often boosted with outstanding touring exhibitions. Chinese art, Andy Warhol and the Pre-Raphaelites have been the subjects of recent programmes.

Angel Row, Bonington and Djanogly galleries are the key contemporary art venues while Neo Art exhibits and sells work by local artists.

Film enthusiasts are well catered for at the Broadway, an excellent art-house cinema with a reputation for independent and world cinema. For novelty value, the 21-seat Screen Room is worth a visit. It claims to be the world’s smallest cinema.
